An organisation will only ever be as good as the performance of the people it employs. The performance of employees will only ever be as good as the managers who manage performance issues. Brilliant ideas, great innovation and excellent strategic planning are great to have, but only if the people who need to act upon these perform effectively.

Some businesses, or teams will perform well without effective performance management because of factors including the market, team dynamics, luck or timing. This is often seen in new businesses and start ups. For these organisations, the results would improve significantly with effective performance management. For organisations that are performing poorly, proper performance management will result in a change of fortunes. For performance management to work, the line manager will need to have the skills and ability to apply effective performance management techniques.
