The UK is going through tough economic times, and it will therefore come as no surprise that levels of stress are on the rise. Work related stress is detrimental to any organisation, and the role of the manager is pivotal and central to the management, reduction and prevention of stress in the work place. Work related stress has direct and indirect financial consequences on organisations. The direct consequences are potential claims at employment tribunals. The indirect costs are poor productivity, low morale and an unmotivated workforce. Managing stress effectively will improve performance, and build trust amongst employees who will value the care and concern their organisation is showing for them. This will result in loyalty that money simply cannot buy. They key of course, is having mangers with the skill set to be able handle stress effectively.
