Understanding discrimination law is essential for all line managers and HR professionals. A vast array of recent case law combined with a raft of new legislation makes discrimination the most rapidly expanding area of employment law. Most people know how to avoid the most obvious discrimination, but they may not recognise the risks of more obscure areas of discrimination as a result of the midfield of grey areas created by the new legislation and recent case law. Failing to keep up with developments can have destructive consequences, and a recent tribunal award of £2.8 million against a well known high street bank should serve as a warning to all employers.
