Managing performance effectively is not just a once or twice year activity- it should be happening throughout the year. So when it comes to appraisal time, there should be no surprises. One of the biggest issues with appraisals is that they are viewed as a form filling exercise, with little follow up action. For an appraisal to be effective however, there needs to be a quality conversation between the reviewer and employee. The paperwork is primarily there to keep a record of the discussion. It is therefore vital that line managers understand this point and create a climate during the actual appraisal for a joint two-way quality conversation to occur, with tangible actions that follow.
